Best Wool Felting Mats: Size, Thickness and Density

A foam pad softens and sheds bits into the work, so sooner or later most felters look for a wool felting mat to replace it. A wool mat is quieter and long lasting. What differs between listings is the size, the thickness and the wool content stated. About 1.5 in is the common thickness; most mats here are 1 in and one is only 0.5 in. No listing gives a density figure: the closest clue is whether the wool is described as solid and wet felted. A 6 x 6 in felting pad is enough for small figures, while a flat picture needs a mat at least as large as the picture, so 8 x 10 in or 10 x 10 in. One honest limit: a wool mat can transfer its own fibers to the work, and a sheet of felt laid on top is the usual answer. Thin wool pressing mats sold for quilting and ironing are a different product and are not made for stabbing into. This guide compares seven wool needle felting mats by what each listing states.
