Best Wool for Wet Felting: Merino Roving and Other Options
Picked from Amazon listings, not hands-on tests. How we pick
Wet felting asks different things of wool than the needle does. Merino is the usual wet felting wool, at about 18 to 24 microns, and combed top (US stores often label it 'roving') has long, parallel fibers that lay out in thin layers. So the listing details that matter are the fiber, the micron figure if one is given, the preparation and the weight. Weight matters because wet felting uses wool quickly: one supplier estimates 75 to 100 g for a scarf and about 100 g for a hat, and a 1 oz pack is about 28 g. Carded wool is not ruled out: one carded merino here names wet felting in its listing. What will not work is superwash wool, whose scales are removed or coated, and acrylic, which does not wet felt; a pack sold as 'felting wool' with no fiber named leaves that question open. This guide compares seven wools by fiber, micron, form and weight as listed. Nothing here was tested.

The picks in detail

Pick 1 · Revolution Fibers
Revolution Fibers merino variety pack, 250 g
See price on AmazonA 250 g assortment of dyed merino top in purple, pink, green and brown (Pretty Pastels), 23 micron average with a 3 to 3.5 in staple. The listing names wet felting, and the weight covers a scarf or a hat by one supplier's estimates, split across the colors.
What the listing offers
- Breed, staple and fineness are stated: merino, 3 to 3.5 in staple (roughly 80 mm), 23 micron average.
- 250 grams in one pack, an assortment of purple, pink, green and brown dyed roving top.
- The listing names wet felting among its uses, along with needle felting, spinning and weaving.
Limits to know
- The weight per color is not stated in the bullets; the color list is in the product description.
- A fixed assortment: you cannot pick the shades, so a single-color project needs a different pack.

Pick 2 · Revolution Fibers
Revolution Fibers merino roving, undyed, 1 lb
See price on AmazonOne pound of natural off-white merino roving with a 3 to 4 in staple and a stated 23-26 micron average. The listing names needle and wet felting; the bulk weight suits larger wet felted pieces or several small ones.
What the listing offers
- 1 lb (16 oz) of 100% natural undyed off-white wool in one pack; the listing says it takes dye well.
- Staple length 3 to 4 in (roughly 90 mm) and a micron average of 23-26 are both stated.
- Washed, carded and combed before packing, and the listing names both needle felting and wet felting.
Limits to know
- The stated 23-26 micron average runs above the usual merino range of about 18 to 24, so it is coarser than the other merino tops here.
- One color only, natural off-white: color has to come from dyeing it or from adding dyed wool.

Pick 3 · Desert Breeze Distributing
Desert Breeze merino combed top, 1 oz, orange
See price on AmazonA 1 oz pack of 100% merino combed top in a single color, processed in Europe, with a 70 mm (2.75 in) staple. The title names wet felting. Sized for small pieces or for adding one color to a larger layout.
What the listing offers
- 100% merino wool, described as combed top, with a stated staple length of 70 mm (2.75 in).
- Fineness is stated: the bullets give a 19-21 micron diameter, inside the usual merino range.
- Sold in 1 oz single-color packs across a wide range of colors, so you buy only the shades a project needs.
Limits to know
- The listing gives two fineness figures: 21.5 micron in the title and 19-21 microns in the bullets.
- 1 oz is about 28 g: a scarf at one supplier's estimate of 75 to 100 g would take three or four packs.

Pick 4 · Revolution Fibers
Revolution Fibers merino top, 25 g, Raven
See price on AmazonA 25 g pack of 100% merino combed top in one color (Raven), 22.5 micron average with a 3 in staple. The smallest pack in this guide: a way to add a single shade to a wet felting layout.
What the listing offers
- Breed, staple and fineness are stated: merino, 3 in staple (roughly 80 mm), 22.5 micron average.
- Described as 100% pure and natural merino wool, sold as combed wool top.
- Each package is 25 grams and colors are sold separately, so you choose only the shades you need.
Limits to know
- 25 g is the smallest pack here, under 1 oz: a hat at about 100 g would take four packs.
- The listing's example use is 3D felted animals; wet felting is not named in the title or bullets.

Pick 5 · Living Dreams Yarn
Living Dreams merino silk blend top, 5 oz
See price on AmazonFive ounces of combed top in one tonal colorway (Spice Market): 70% superfine merino with 30% mulberry and tussah silk, stated at 19 microns. The title names spinning or felting; the listing describes a lustrous shine.
What the listing offers
- The blend is stated exactly: 70% superfine merino, 30% mulberry and tussah silk, 19 microns.
- Combed top described as soft and light with a lustrous shine, from Italian merino and two kinds of silk.
- Wool from non-mulesed flocks, dyed in accordance with Oeko-Tex standards, according to the listing.
Limits to know
- 30% of the fiber is silk, not wool, and the listing does not say how the blend behaves in wet felting.
- One tonal colorway per pack, from saffron to chili shades, with no weight per shade stated.

Pick 6 · WONVOC
Wonvoc white merino core wool, carded, 8 oz
See price on AmazonAn 8 oz pack of white merino sold as core wool. Merino is a fine wool, so this is a softer core than Corriedale; the listing describes it as carded and ready to use.
What the listing offers
- Listing states natural merino wool in an 8 oz pack.
- Described as carded white felting wool of consistent density.
- Listed as clean and odorless, ready to use out of the packaging without pre-cleaning.
Limits to know
- Merino is finer than the medium wools usually sold as core wool, which catch the needle more easily.
- No micron count or staple length is stated, and 8 oz is half the weight of the 1 lb packs here.

Pick 7 · Living Dreams Yarn
Living Dreams merino roving ends mix, 200 g
See price on AmazonA 200 g surprise bag of fiber leftovers from yarn production: mostly fine merino, but it may include merino blends, alpaca, camel, silk and synthetic fibers. Suited to samples and experiments, since the contents of each bag differ.
What the listing offers
- 200 grams of assorted fiber leftovers from the maker's own yarn production in the Pacific Northwest.
- Mostly fine merino wool, in as many colors as the maker can include: natural, muted or bright.
- The listing names felting, spinning and blending, and presents the bag as a way to try new textures and staple lengths.
Limits to know
- The bag may include synthetic fibers, and synthetics such as acrylic do not wet felt, so sort the mix and felt a sample first.
- Every bag is different: no micron, no color list and no weight per fiber type are stated.
