Best Wool Roving for Spinning: Merino, BFL and Corriedale Top

Picked from Amazon listings, not hands-on tests. How we pick

Most fiber sold as roving for spinning is actually combed top: the fibers are lined up parallel, which drafts smoothly into a worsted style yarn. For a first spindle or wheel, a medium wool with a longer staple is easier than superfine merino, which is slippery and drafts fast. Blue Faced Leicester (BFL, around 24 to 28 microns, long and lustrous) and Corriedale (around 25 to 30 microns, with good crimp) are the classic learner fibers. Merino at 19 to 23 microns spins the softest next-to-skin yarn once your hands have the rhythm. Check the stated micron, the weight in the bag (4 oz makes a small skein, 8 oz or more is a project) and whether it is pre-drafted. This guide compares seven spinning fibers by breed, micron, weight and preparation.

The picks in detail

Pick 1 · Revolution Fibers

Revolution Fibers Corriedale Wool Top, 8 oz

See price on Amazon

Revolution Fibers dyed Corriedale combed top, 8 oz, 26 micron, about 1 in wide with an 80 to 120 mm staple, ethically sourced and Oeko-Tex dyed.

What the listing offers

  • Corriedale's crimp and medium micron make it one of the easiest wools to learn spinning on.
  • 8 oz is enough for a real project, such as a hat or a pair of mitts.
  • Listing gives micron, width and staple length, which helps you plan the yarn.

Limits to know

  • 26 micron is a little coarser than merino for scarves against sensitive skin.
  • Single solid color per bag, so heathered or gradient yarn needs a second fiber.

Pick 2 · Living Dreams Yarn

Living Dreams BFL Wool Roving Combed Top, 4 oz

See price on Amazon

Living Dreams Yarn BFL combed top, 4 oz (113 g) in solid Sprout, 26 micron with a 3 to 4 inch staple, sold for spinning and felting.

What the listing offers

  • BFL's long staple and luster make it forgiving for a first spindle or wheel project.
  • 4 oz of a single solid color is enough for a small skein or a matching set of samples.
  • The listing states it is soft enough for next-to-skin wear despite the 26 micron count.

Limits to know

  • Solid color only, so you will not learn how variegated fiber stripes or blends in yarn.
  • 4 oz is not enough for a sweater or larger garment.

Pick 3 · Living Dreams Yarn

Hand Dyed BFL Wool Roving, 5 oz, Greenery

See price on Amazon

Living Dreams Yarn 5 oz gradient pack of hand dyed BFL roving in five shades of 1 oz each (Greenery), pre-drafted to thumb thickness for beginning spinners.

What the listing offers

  • Pre-drafted to thumb thickness, so beginners can focus on twist rather than pulling fiber thin.
  • Five graded shades let you spin a gradient yarn or practice plying different colors.
  • BFL is often described as easier to spin than merino, a good match for learners.

Limits to know

  • 1 oz per shade is a small amount, so each color section of the yarn will be short.
  • Higher price per ounce than undyed or solid bulk fiber.

Pick 4 · Living Dreams Yarn

Top Notch Superfine Merino Fiber

See price on Amazon

Living Dreams Yarn Top Notch 4 oz of 100% superfine merino, 19 micron, in the blended Nomad colorway, for wheel or drop spindle as well as felting.

What the listing offers

  • 19 micron superfine merino spins very soft yarn for cowls, hats and other next-to-skin pieces.
  • Blended colors give a heathered look without having to card or blend yourself.
  • Also lists needle, wet and nuno felting, so leftovers are not wasted.

Limits to know

  • Superfine merino drafts fast and slippery, harder for a first-time spinner than BFL or Corriedale.
  • 4 oz bag is a small skein's worth, so larger projects need several.
